Negligent Arthroscopic Surgery and Care Caused Serious Injury, Lawsuit

Surgical procedures have come a long way over the past several decades. Injuries that used to require difficult surgery and long recovery times are now becoming routine thanks to arthroscopic surgery techniques. Arthroscopic surgery allows for a small incision that makes reduces pain and healing time. While most surgical procedures go as planned, sometimes there are problems or mistakes. A man recently filed a lawsuit against the doctors and hospital after he suffered a serious post-surgical infection. The lawsuit was filed in Cook County against The Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park and two doctors.

Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy is surgery done to repair and examine the shoulder joint and surrounding tissues. An arthroscope is a tiny camera that is inserted though a small incision. The surgeon can inspect the internal areas and make any repairs necessary to damaged tissues. The procedure is generally considered very safe. The incision site is very small and usually heals with proper care. The shoulder itself heals over a period of weeks or months, depending on the extent of surgery that was required. Arthroscopy is often used instead of open surgery because it is easier and offers a faster healing time.

Complications and Risks

There are actually few risks associated with arthroscopic surgery. The procedure is done while the patient is under general anesthetic and may be completed as outpatient surgery. It is important that patients are not taking any blood clotting preventative medications prior to the procedure. After the surgery the patient will have stiffness and pain in the shoulder and will need to keep the arm immobile for a period of time. In this case, the man’s surgical incision site became infected after surgery. According to the information, the man doctors and hospital failed to provide proper care and did not use caution in his treatment.

Infection after Surgery

Because the incision area is very small, the site should heal well as long as proper care is provided. The man in this case states that the doctors were negligent after the surgery. They failed to examine and evaluate the incision site and did not properly monitor the site to ensure that it was healing as it should. They also failed to notice that there was a post-surgical infection. As a result, the man’s shoulder became extremely infected causing him pain and a fever. He suffered severe and possibly permanent injuries as a result
Medical Malpractice

Doctors are held to a high standard of care and must provide patients with proper diagnosis and treatment. When a doctor makes a mistake or fails to provide care required the result is negligence. This is also called medical malpractice because the doctor should have known that his actions, or lack or actions as in this case, could cause serious harm.
