Earlier this month a founding partner at Levin & Perconti, Attorney Steve Levin, was the subject of an in-depth profile published by Leading Lawyers. The article goes into detail as it describes Steve’s background, early legal career, achievements, and future drive.
An Illinois native, Steve grew up with his family in Skokie, Illinois. He had two siblings; his mother raised the family at home while his father worked various jobs to support the family. While at a Skokie elementary school he met a classmate named Marsha. The two dated and eventually married after graduating college. The couple has been together nearly 50 years. They now have a large family with four adult children and eleven grandchildren.
Early Legal Work
Levin graduated in the mid-1970s from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law. His first job after law school was with a local criminal defense firm. He stayed with the firm for several years, learning the ropes and honing out his advocacy skills. In 1980 he left the firm and started his own practice, still focusing solely on criminal defense.
It wasn’t long before he began to consider that other practice areas might be a better fit. In 1983, he created a new firm with his sister, Levin & Perconti partner Susan Novosad. The firm worked mainly on civil injury cases, advocating for those who were harmed by the negligence of others.
About five years later that firm merged with a practice created by Attorney John J. Perconti. That pairing has persisted over the last 21 years, with Levin & Perconti growing into an important Chicago law firm.
Over the course of his many decades as an Illinois attorney, Steve has handled a large number of diverse cases. However, one area where he has made a particularly important mark is in the world of nursing home neglect and abuse. When Levin first began practicing law, few attorneys handled cases stemming from mistreatment at long-term care facilities.
But Steve was one of the first advocates to make fair use of the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act to protect the rights of residents at these homes. In the years since he first began, Levin has built a huge track record of successfully ensuring fairness following preventable injury in these homes. He now sits on the Leadership Council of the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care on top of being an active member of the American Associations for Justice’s Nursing Home Litigation Group.
One unique testament to his groundbreaking work on nursing home neglect cases is the fact that colleagues have coined the term “Levinning” in his honor. It refers to a unique way to examine witnesses in order to fully explore the care (or lack of care) provided at particular nursing homes.
While Steve already has decades of legal experience under his belt, he continues to provide relentless advocacy for clients throughout Illinois who suffer injury in any capacity. From medical malpractice cases to nursing home neglect and everything in between, Attorney Levin and everyone at our firm is proud to stand up for those harmed by misconduct and negligence.
