Chicago Hospitals Miss Out On ‘Best Hospital’ List

Struggling Hospitals

Chicago Hospitals Fall Behind in Safety and Quality Rankings

According to The Leapfrog Group’s bi-annual list of hospital grades based on hospital survey results, several Chicago hospitals received the highest grade for overall safety and quality. Still, surprisingly, some of the city’s top hospitals didn’t make this session’s cut. Leapfrog sends the survey to hospitals in which the group said about 2,100 participated. Hospitals were asked about specific measures for example related to hand hygiene, intensive care unit physician staffing, bedsores and falls, C-section rates, rates of episiotomies during childbirth, and radiation doses for pediatric patients during CT scans. Based on the feedback provided, including a review of health insurance information, the non-profit then assigned each hospital with a grade of A through F.

Illinois’ hospitals that received an A grade in the Fall 2019 report, include:

  1. AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook
  2. AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center GlenOaks
  3. AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale
  4. AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center La Grange
  5. AMITA Health Resurrection Medical Center Chicago
  6. AMITA Health Saint Joseph Hospital Chicago
  7. AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center Joliet
  8. AMITA Health Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center Chicago
  9. AMITA Health St. Alexius Medical Center Hoffman Estates
  10. Edward Hospital
  11. Elmhurst Memorial Hospital
  12. University of Chicago Medical Center
  13. Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers
  14. Loretta Hospital
  15. Loyola Gottlieb Memorial Hospital
  16. Loyola’s University Medical Center
  17. NorthShore University HealthSystem – Evanston Hospital
  18. NorthShore University HealthSystem – Glenbrook Hospital
  19. NorthShore University HealthSystem – Highland Park Hospital
  20. NorthShore University HealthSystem – Skokie Hospital
  21. Northwest Community Hospital
  22. Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital
  23. Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital
  24. Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital

  1. Rush Copley Medical Center
  2. Rush Oak Park Hospital
  3. Silver Cross Hospital
  4. West Suburban Medical Center

Several other sources, such as U.S. News & World Report, rank hospitals and some analysts argue may be more accurate than Leapfrog’s review. For example, Lurie has been named as one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for several years but did not participate in this survey so remains without a grade. Northwestern Memorial has been named the No. 1 hospital in the state by several sources but received a B grade by Leapfrog. The reputable Rush University Medical Center also received a B rating and have contested against the survey’s grade.

Chicago Hospitals Still on the ‘D’ List

In May 2019, Leapfrog published its first survey of the year using the same methodology. The group concluded that some of the nation’s most dangerous medical centers included five Chicago-area hospitals with a D list ranking.

  1. Jackson Park Hospital
  2. John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital
  3. Loretto Hospital
  4. Sinai Hospital
  5. Weiss Memorial Hospital

Again, Mt. Sinai, John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, and the University of Illinois Hospital made the most recent D list.
