Long Hospital Wait Contributed to Patient’s Permanent Injuries

When we go to the emergency room we expect to be seen by a physician as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, a man recently suffered permanent and disabling injuries after his diagnosis and treatment was delayed after a fall. The man entered the hospital after a fall, but it took hours for the staff to determine his condition. In the meantime, the man was in extreme pain. The man filed a lawsuit in Cook County stating that the neglectful medical care led to permanent injuries. The man is now a quadriplegic.

Prolonged Wait Time

According to the lawsuit, the man waited for hours to receive medical care. The incident happened at St. Joseph Hospital. The man came to the hospital after suffering a fall. He was in severe pain, but the medical staff took hours to examine and diagnose his condition. The lawsuit states that the staff was negligent by not providing adequate medical attention in a timely manner. The man’s condition deteriorated because of the failure to promptly provide proper medical care.

Hospital Negligence

Hospitals, doctors, and medical professionals are required to provide proper care to patients. They are expected to know the care required to their patients. When they fail to provide proper care, they are negligent. In this case, the hospital is named in the lawsuit because they are held liable for ensuring that policies and staffing are in place to adequately treat all of the patients in a timely manner. Their failure to do so in this case, caused a serious and lifelong injury. Had they provided proper care, the man’s injuries may not have been so severe.

Quadriplegia

Quadriplegia is the paralysis of all four limbs. It occurs when the spinal cord suffers a severe injury or is severed. Damage to the spinal cord may happen due to a serious fall. Quadriplegia is typically characterized by loss of movement in the limbs, trunk, and pelvic organs. One of the most noted spinal cord injuries happened to actor Christopher Reeve, after falling from a horse. The outlook for quadriplegics depends on the severity of the injury. However, once the spinal cord has been severed it cannot be repaired. Thus, the patient will not improve over time. In fact, other serious medical conditions often affect paraplegics and quadriplegics due to their immobility.

Medical Malpractice

In this case, as in many others, the failure to treat a patient in a timely manner contributed to a serious and life-threatening injury. The man, while in severe pain, was able to move when he entered the hospital. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is essential in treating spinal cord injuries. The man and his family now face a lifetime of expensive medical care and the loss of enjoyment of life. He must now receive constant care and his quality of life is greatly reduced.

Those who are injured because of medical malpractice are entitled to compensation. In this instance, the man is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 to cover past and future medical care and treatment, as well as money for pain and suffering.
