When you get medical treatment, you expect that your health will improve. In one recent case, a man alleges that his arm was injured due to the negligence and improper care of a Hoffman Estates doctor. The man filed a lawsuit in Cook County seeking to recover damages caused by the injuries the man suffered to his arm. According to the lawsuit, the doctor failed to properly diagnose and treat the problem, causing the condition to worsen. The lawsuit seeks damages of at least $50,000.
The man who filed the lawsuit states that he developed compartment syndrome in his forearm because of the negligent treatment by the doctor. Compartment syndrome happens in small areas or compartments inside the tissues. Inflammation in the area prevents blood flow around it, thus causing damage to the tissues. It can be caused by prolonged compression, such as being in a bandage that is wrapped too tightly. It may also occur due to pressure from bleeding. These are situations that generally can happen after a bone fracture or break. Compartment syndrome may also be the result of surgery.
Failure to Diagnose and Treat
The lawsuit in this case states that the doctors failed to diagnose compartment syndrome and did not provide proper treatment. Compartment syndrome can occur in a relatively short period of time. Doctors must examine the patient regularly to ensure that compartment syndrome does not occur. For example, in situations where a cast had been put on, the doctor must periodically remove the cast and replace it with another one to account for any swelling that may have occurred.
Serious and Permanent Injuries
When compartment syndrome is diagnosed early, the patient will likely require little additional treatment, and will probably regain full function. However, if the problem is not timely treated, the patient could lose feeling in the affected area, could have numbness and/or pain, and possibly, bruising. The damages could cause permanent restriction on the use of the affected area. In this case, the man indicates that he has suffered a serious condition in his right forearm.
Mistakes by doctors are, unfortunately a common occurrence. When a mistake causes serious harm or permanent injuries to a patient, it may rise to the level of medical malpractice. A doctor is responsible for providing proper care. When the doctor fails to do so, a lawsuit may be the best course of action. In this case, the lawsuit names the doctor who treated the patient, as well as St. Alexius Medical Center, located in Hoffman Estates. Those who were injured because of the negligent actions of a doctor or other medical professional, may be entitled to compensation. You may be able to collect money for medical expenses that were incurred as a result of the injury. Additionally, future medical treatments may be needed. Victims are also entitled to money for lost wages, for pain and suffering, and for loss of the use of the limb.
