Many people are afraid of going to the dentist, even though dental practices have improved greatly over the last decades. Special dental practices even offer gentle dentistry to accommodate terrified patients. One dentist in France has done nothing to calm the nerves of anxious patients. The dentist, dubbed the “dentist of horror” was found guilty of mutilating more than 100 patients with terrible dental practices.
The dentist in this case had been practicing for a number of years in a rural area of France. The dentist performed a number of horrible acts including pulling teeth that were healthy, breaking patient’s jaws, and causing abscesses and blood poisoning. Further, the dentist caused pain and suffering of more than 100 patients.
Many Patients Were Hurt
It only takes one incident of medical malpractice to cause serious harm to a patient. This dentist hurt multiple patients over an extended period of time. One patient recalls having had general anesthetic for a dental procedure and woke up alone with a post-it note from the dentist to schedule the next appointment. Another patient had eight teeth pulled at one time and was bleeding for several days. In the United States, as in other countries, doctors and dentists must follow specific procedures when providing medical or dental treatment. These procedures were not followed in this case.
The dentist was finally charged with aggravated assault and fraud but had fled the country while his trial was pending. He was later recaptured in Canada and was subsequently tried and found guilty. The dentist was sentenced to eight years in jail and is banned from practicing dentistry again in his lifetime. According to court documents, the man was suffering from psychological problems and one psychiatrist stated that the man had narcissistic tendencies. The prosecutor remarked that the dentist took pleasure in causing pain to others.
In addition to the physical harm inflicted upon the patients, the dentist was also found guilty of insurance fraud. The dentist was submitting fraudulent insurance claims for the patients and carried out a large number of needless procedures, simply to get the insurance reimbursement. The legal action against the dentist included criminal charges for taking money that did not belong to him through false insurance submissions.
Had this incident occurred in the United States, the injured patients would all be seeking damages from the dentist and his insurance company. Medical malpractice is serious and can cause permanent harm. Patients who are hurt because of the mistakes or negligence of a doctor are entitled to damages. Damages may include the medical costs to resolve the injury, money for pain and suffering, and other items such as lost wages and legal fees. The laws in the United States are clear and victims are entitled to file a civil claim to get payment for medical negligence.
