In 1997, an 81-year old man was severely beaten by his roommate at a nursing home. During the trial, testimony surfaced that a nurse knowingly paired the frail, 81-year old man with the mentally ill roommate. The man suffered extreme physical and emotional abuse when he was beaten with a water pitcher, a glass, and the abuser’s fists. The jury's response to the nursing home abuse came in the form a $160 million verdict for the 81 year-old victim.
